Norman L. Smith, a partner with the firm, concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial litigation, estate litigation, and white-collar defense. Mr. Smith is a 1985 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law, where he was Co-Chair of the Moot Court Board and a recipient of the William P. Cunningham Award. Upon graduation, he served as law clerk for the Honorable E.O. Weant, Jr., on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Before entering the private practice of law, Mr. Smith served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland with the Divisions of Criminal Investigations and Criminal Appeals. He is admitted to practice before the Maryland Court of Appeals, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Smith is the Reporter for the Maryland Court of Appeals Commission on Professionalism and for the Maryland State Bar Association Long Range Planning Committee, chaired by the Honorable Lynne A. Battaglia. For over 15 years, he has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Mr. Smith serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Maryland Daily Record; he is a member of the Wranglers Law Club; and a Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation.

Mr. Smith has briefed and argued at least 50 cases in the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the Maryland Court of Appeals, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Representative cases include In re Schwartz, 392 Md. 74 (2006) (successful reinstatement of disbarred lawyer); Attorney Grievance Commission v. Hayes, 367 Md. 504 (2002)(exception to the “automatic disbarment” rule); Walton v. Mariner Health of Maryland, Inc. 391 Md. 643 (2006)(amicus brief quoted extensively in Court of Appeals opinion); Oak Crest Village v. Murphy, 379 Md. 229 (2004)(successfully challenged nursing home policy regarding Medicaid eligibility).

Before entering the practice of law, Mr. Smith was a professional musician. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, he served as principal trumpet in the New Orleans Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony, the New York Chamber Orchestra (with which he is a recorded soloist), the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at Lincoln Center (N.Y.), the Aspen Chamber Orchestra, the Casals Festival Orchestra, and as guest principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Lawyers for the Arts.
